2011 Northern California Council of Camera Clubs Annual Award Winners Named
Seven APS Members Are Among the Winners with 12 Images
Sunday, Jan. 8, saw seven Alameda Photographic Society (APS) members in the winner's circle at the Northern California Council of Camera Club's 2010 Annual Awards Banquet: Lee Aurich, Steve Busse, Dana Constance, Tom Debley, Wendell DeLano, John Goyer and Michael Kawano. Congratulations to all!
The APS winners received honors for a total of 12 images. N4C judges select the winning images from among all of those that received any honor during the year in N4C monthly competitions, so the images chosen are among the best of the best from members of a total of 11 photography clubs in N4C.
Following, in alphabetical order, are the winners and their image titles.
Lee Aurich received 4th Place in Pictorial Advanced for his photograph “The Foggy City.”
Steve Busse picked up an Honorable Mention for his image “Meat shop in Antanarivo, Madagascar” in Travel Basic.
Also in Travel Basic, Dana Constance won an Honorable Mention for his photograph titled “Klippan Yacht Club (Helsinki) in Winter.”
"Desert Blister Beetle (Lytta magister) Feeds on Primary Food Source, Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa)" by Tom Debley received an Honorable Mention in Nature Intermediate.
Wendell DeLano won two awards, an Honorable Mention in Pictorial Masters for “Ice and Frozen Grass” and an Honorable Mention in Travel Advanced for “View of Bay Bridge from Treasure Island.”
John Goyer received four awards, a 3rd Place in Travel Masters for “Plaza de Espana, Sevilla Spain - One of the Most Beautiful Spots in the City to Enjoy a Quiet Evening,” and three Honorable Mentions for images in APS competitions for Creative Masters: “Memories of a Newport Weekend,” “Alien Beauty” and “Bee, Cool...”
Michael Kawano won two Honorable Mentions, one in Journalism Basic for “Battling Knights at the 2011 Northern California Renaissance Faire” and one in Pictorial Basic for “Tech Shadows.”

Our winner in November for the theme "Symmetry" was Johanne Constance for her image "Clouds in Symmetry."
As the winner, Johanna picks the theme for our January competition, which is "Recession."

Final Deadline Near for Entries in FotoClave 2011 Competition for APS Members
Alameda Photographic Society members are invited to submit prints and/or projected images annual FotoClave Competition. FotoClave is the premier photography forum in Northern California, drawing the finest amateur film and digital photographers for a weekend of learning and sharing. It’s put on by the Northern California, San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast Councils of Camera Clubs. Dates are Oct. 28-30 in Concord. 2010 found three APS members in the winner's circle, Jan Delano, Wendell Delano and Steve Stuckey. Find details at FotoClave 2011.
Print Competition
Print competition is now closed.
Projected Images
A few days remain to for Projected Image Competition. Divisions are: Pictorial, Nature, Travel, Journalism, and Creative. You will submit entries the same way as for club competitions once the five divisions are set up on the APS club website. The deadline is midnight Sunday, Aug. 7.
There is a maximum of 5 entries per division, with no maker awarded more than 2 acceptances per division. Accepted projected images will be displayed in a slide show program at FotoClave, an honor in itself. Again, previously “accepted” in a FotoClave are ineligible.

San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory's 3rd Annual 'Click Off' Contest Deadline Sept. 1
The San Francis
co Bay Bird Observatory has announced its 2011 Click Off, a photo contest highlighting the birds and habitat diversity found in the Bay Area and beyond. APS members are invited to submit entries. Winners are selected from six categories: Bird Portraits, Endangered Species, Birds in their Habitat, Bird Behavior, Human Interaction, and Birds of the World. In addition, a People’s Choice Award is selected from the Category Winners and a new Youth Award will be awarded to the best image submitted by a person 18 years or younger. Deadline is Sept. 1. Several members of the Alameda Photographic Society set out on Saturday, May 21, for a visit to the Fitzgerald Marine Sanctuary near Moss Beach on California's San Mateo Coast. They followed several hours of photography with lunch on an outdoor deck at a nearby restaurant. Click here for a slide show of some of their images for your viewing pleasure. Field trips are a regular activity for members of the Alameda Photographic Society to get together to find interesting places to go to take photographs.

More Information About the Alameda Photographic Society:
What we do
We meet twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7:30pm at 2441 San Jose Avenue, Alameda, CA, in the meeting hall of the First Christian Church at the corner of San Jose Avenue and Park Avenue. (Click here for a map).
Second Tuesdays are competition meeting, where digital images are critiqued by an outside judge. Winning images in competitions are then entered into a regional competition where they are judged against the work of other clubs who are part of the Northern California Council of Camera Clubs. Competitions are in five categories: Pictorial, Creative, Journalism, Nature, and Travel.

Fourth Tuesdays are program meetings, with an invited guest speaker to talk about a particular area of photography, or an exhibition night. We also hold regular field trips and seminars related to the art of photography. Details of upcoming programs and field trips can be found in the calendar.

Visitors are always welcome at all meetings.
Mission
The purpose of the Alameda Photographic Society is: to promote the art and science of photography in its various forms through the association of its members for study and entertainment; to encourage photographic contests and exhibitions; and to stimulate greater interest and advancement in the knowledge and practice of photography.

Alameda Photographic Society was founded in 1940. We are celebrating our 71st anniversary this year. You can read more about the history of our club here.
